Ziad Rahbani is Lebanon’s most famous living composer. The son of the legendary singer Fairuz, Rahbani began his career in his early teens. Beirut-born DJ Ernesto Chahoud and French label We Want Sounds have reissued a handful of Rahbani’s enduring albums recently, but this show will mostly concentrate on work by the composer that has yet to be published outside of the Arabic-speaking world.

Simon joins the broadcast (at approx. 7:30 pm)  to explore how Cairo street music mahraganat—and the official attempts to censor it—began decades earlier with shaabi, a form of folk music from northern Egypt, popular on cassette.

Bappi Lahiri (1952-2022)

 


7-10 PM tonight on WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio: Crowned Bollywood’s “Disco King” in the 1980s, Bappi Lahiri was the only child of Bengali musical artists Aparesh and Bansuri Lahiri and the nephew of playback singer Kishore Kumar. Though best known for his upbeat hits written for Disco Dancer and Dance Dance, Lahiri’s oeuvre was as varied as anyone’s in the business, including romantic soundtracks for evergreen classics like Chalte Chalte. Lahiri passed away last Wednesday, and this three-hour tribute will honor the full spectrum of his output.

Lata’s career began before the partition and she continued to record, if sporadically, into the 21st century.
