From Mahraganat to Shaabi with special guest Andrew Simon

TONIGHT from 7-10 PM EDT on WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio, Bodega Pop will be taking something of an audio tour of Andrew Simon’s new book Media of the Masses: Cassette Culture in Modern Egypt. Simon joins the broadcast (at approx. 7:30 pm)  to explore how Cairo street music mahraganat—and the official attempts to censor it—began decades earlier with shaabi, a form of folk music from northern Egypt, popular on cassette.
