Epiphanies
The Epiphanies column has been running in the U.K. music magazine The Wire for nearly 20 years. Each month a different writer, musician and/or academic describes a life-changing encounter with music. Last year, The Wire released a collection of 52 Epiphanies, ranging from Geeta Dayal's discovery of extremely repetitious music as a bridge between herself and her classical Indian music enthusiast parents to Matthew Collin's remembrance of Belgrade independent radio station B92 as a beacon of resistance in 1990s Serbia.
TONIGHT, from 7-10 PM ET, Bodega Pop Live on WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio spins a few dozen life-changing tracks discovered over the last 20 years in bodegas and mom-and-pop run media stores from Flushing, Queens, and Oakland, California, to the Medina of Marrakesh and the banlieues of Paris.

PLEDGE to WFMU's SILENT FUNDRAISER!
Pledge here to support WFMU during our silent fundraiser!
This month I’ll broadcast my 150th show on WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio – 450 hours of action-packed tracks by artists you’ve rarely (if ever) heard anywhere else, much of it found in immigrant-run bodegas in New York, Montreal, Chicago, Paris, Dallas, Seattle, and beyond.
Tonight’s show is no different: 3 hours of sizzling tracks from Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Libya, focusing mostly on music produced over the last several years in Aleppo, Damascus, Amman, Cairo, and Benghazi.
I’m just one of nearly 100 DJs at listener-supported WFMU – from legends like Vicki Bennett, Liz Berg, Ken Freedman, Gaylord Fields, Doug Schulkind, and Brian Turner, to newer voices like GTDR stream-mates Mayuko Fujino, Jeff Golick, Jesse Kaminsky, and Amanda Nazario – who serve up audio delights you may never hear, even on the most adventurous stations, let alone Clear Channel, Spotify, etc.
If the shared cultural experience of mind-warping music radio curated by people with awe-inspiring collections and zero obligation to advertisers, corporations, or government agencies is something you care about, then show your love by pledging here, and ensure its continued existence on this planet – which, I hardly need to remind you, is your planet, too.

Gỗ Lim | Gái Làng
Before her death from lupus in 2012, Nga Nhí fronted popular Vietnamese riot grrrl band Gỗ Lim.
Though they were together for only a year, they recorded one of the greatest albums of the genre, Gái Làng, an angular but sprawling sonic assault with nods to Gang of Four, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fugazi, Bikini Kill, and the more experimental end of Vietnamese hard rock and metal, but ultimately unlike anything before it.
I'm going to open tonight's Bodega Pop Live show with half a dozen tracks from this astonishing, bar-raising, ear-altering album, and I'd love for you to be there to hear it with me.

OTHER MUSIC
On Wednesday, June 29, from 7-10 PM EDT, Bodega Pop Live on WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio mourns the passing of one of my favorite record stores, ever, OTHER MUSIC, which closed its doors forever on Saturday, June 25.
While I found most of the CDs I've collected over the last 20 years in immigrant-run bodegas and media stores, I often wound up at Other Music to poke about for things I wasn't going to stumble on in an Algerian meat & hookah shop or Burmese video & dry goods store.
American, British, and French music, yes, but mostly dozens of reissues and compilations of music from all over the world -- I knew I could count on Other Music to have the latest Sublime Frequencies, Dust-to-Digital, or Honest Jon's release, and they never disappointed.
What's surprising, in retrospect, is all of the imported stuff I found there; last week, it was a mini-treasure trove of Thai hip-hop CDs imported from Thailand. (I have literally scoured every Thai grocery, electronics store, restaurant, and sweets shop from here to Portland looking for Joey Boy's 2004 EP Sorry I'm Happy, but where and when did I finally find it? Last week, Other Music. Yes! *fist pump*)
I was nowhere near the most adventurous nor the most prolific shopper at Other Music, but what I casually picked up over the last two decades has proven essential, thrilling, inspiring, life-affirming listening -- from the first thing I ever bought there, a then-new Raincoats live recording released on CD in 1998, to Alice Bag's debut album, Alice Bag, which I picked up on its official release date, literally yesterday. (Yes, they were still stocking the shelves with new product the day before they closed.)
If you live, or lived in New York, I don't need to tell you what a great place Other Music was.
Was! God, it hurts to say that. Nothing, likely, will ever replace it. Not here, anyway, or not in Manhattan.
The once mighty Tower Records that occupied the entire block across the street from Other Music is now a Blink Fitness Gym. (I have nothing against gyms; I belong to one. I never go, but I nonetheless proudly belong.) I don't know what Other Music's much smaller space will become in the future -- though my money is on a juice bar. Because God knows when you finish rocking your Blink workout, you are one mother. fucking. parched. bitch.

Firas Abou Fakher | Mashrou' Leila
This Wednesday, June 1, from 7-10 PM EDT, guitarist Firas Abou Fakher, of Lebanon's legendary Mashrou' Leila, will join us in the studio to talk about the evolution of the band's music since they started playing in 2008, the Lebanese alt music scene they came out of and helped to define, and their first ever North American tour.
Much of the band's press has focused on their openly gay frontman Hamed Sinno, their frank lyrics, often satirizing the attitudes and oppressive tendencies of conservative politics and social mores in the middle east, and the controversies, bannings, and huge popularity that have been the result.
We may touch on these issues, but will focus mostly on the music, listening to tracks from their first, eponymous 2009 album, the 2011 EP El Hal Romancy, their breakout 2013 album Raasük, and their latest, last year's Ibn El Leil.

BALIGH HAMDI
Like Mohamed Abdel Wahab before him, Egyptian composer Baligh Hamdi helped to modernize Arabic music, pushing at its boundaries through popular songs and music for film and television that sampled from western and other eastern ideas and instrumentation (saxophone, electric guitar, sitar, electronic keyboards) while steeped in the folkloric tradition he studied as a young adult.
Born in Cairo in 1931, Hamdi reputedly dedicated his life to becoming a composer before he was even a teen. He got his first major break in 1957 when Oum Kalthoum tracked him down through friend and fellow composer Muhammad Fawzi; Hamdi and Kalthoum collaborated on "Inta Feen wi-'l-Hubb Feen?" recorded in 1960 for Misrophon -- Hamdi subsequently wrote a new song for the diva nearly every year after that until her death in 1975.
Hamdi's work with Kalthoum was considered "light" in comparison to standbys Riad al-Sunbati and Zakariyya Ahmed, but Kalthoum knew that the younger composer brought her image a fresh appeal -- this is the period, after all, when electric guitarist Omar Khorshid became a permanent fixture of her orchestra.
Hamdi worked with all of the other major singers of the time, from Shadia and Faiza Ahmed to Abdel Halim Hafez, for whom he wrote the enduring "Mahwood" and "Khosara Khosara," which was sampled decades later by Timbaland for Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'" -- the subject of a highly publicized copyright battle with Hamdi's family. (His work has been sampled by artists across at least three continents.)
Hamdi continued to write for up and coming singers -- Najat al-Saghira, Sabah, Hani Shaker, Warda (to whom he was married for nearly a decade), Mayada el-Hennawy, and Latifa, supporting and in some cases launching their careers.
This Wednesday night, from 7-10 PM EDT, Bodega Pop Live on WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio pays tribute to this towering figure of Arabic music, with a three-hour retrospective including rare live solo tracks, out of print collaborations and experimentation, and some of the hits that made him famous throughout the Arabic-speaking world.

YURI MOROZOV
On Wednesday, March 2, Bodega Pop Live on WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio took a tour of the 70s and early 80s work of one of Soviet Russia's most thrilling and enigmatic figures: Yuri Morozov (aka Yury Morozov).
Russian studio engineer / music producer Yuri Morozov (Юрий Морозов, 1948 – 2006) led a series of not-so-secret double lives: he was also a poet, novelist, musician, singer-songwriter, composer, visual artist, and hippie scofflaw. He was not exactly Russia’s John Lennon, as some have claimed, although Lennon was one of many significant influences. He was Russia’s Lennon & McCartney, R. Stevie Moore, William Onyeabor, Bob Dylan, Konrad Plank, David Byrne, Captain Beefheart, Czesław Niemen, Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and David Bowie all wrapped up into one.
Morozov recorded a reputed 60 albums—60 studio albums—the bulk of them in the 1970s and 80s, self-released and distributed magnitizdat-style. The earliest were recorded in his small, cluttered St. Petersburg apartment; these include the legendary Land of the Gnomes (1972), Cherry Orchard of Jimi Hendrix (1973) and Cretin Wedding (1976); beginning in 1977 he courted imprisonment by recording his work illegally, after hours, in the state-run studio where he worked. The next year he recorded the first of at least three album-length electronic music experiments—but rather than austere collections of purely synthesized chirps, bleeps and warbles, The Inexplicable (1978) and its follow-ups, Spells and Human Extinction (both 1979) were trippy psychedelic masterpieces with shrieking guitars, human grunts and squeals, and endlessly mutating and bizarre synth landscapes and textures.
